In 1960 Lenny Placed 2nd behind Donald Hulme (who went on to be World Champion). Then in May, 1962, as a student at VanderCook College of Music in Chicago, Lenny placed 1st (State Champion) in the Illinois Accordion Virtuoso Competition performing the "Tchaikowsky Piano Concerto in Bb minor" transcribed by Charles Magnante.
